An F1 Championship just for Women? Really?

Monday morning the 30th of March saw many people thinking Bernie Ecclestone had put his calendar forward rather than his watch when he announced the consideration of a separate F1 championship for female drivers. This of course was met with the sort reaction that double points, artificial sprinklers, the treatment of smaller teams and the loss of complete free to air TV coverage has been met. Conspiracy theorists may say that a different ludicrous F1 regulation change / announcement is imminent and this has been put out to weather the storm but lets deal with that if and when it comes.

IMO a female only category is wrong, just plain wrong, does that mean we can only have female car designers, pit crew and strategists? will Claire Williams and Monisha Kaltenborn have to move to this new series? of course it wont. we have females in F1 already its simply most female racing drivers are not (yet) good enough to reach the top of the sport. Personally I want to see a championship where we have the best drivers pitted against the best drivers weather they are male, female, Goose or 3 legged Reindeer!

If we want to get more women into F1 and motor sports in general (and why shouldn't we) more needs to be done at grass roots levels, although this does seem to be happening more and more as the seasons roll on. Ginetta Junior racing on the BTCC support package has seen plenty of young ladies over the last few seasons, many moving on up through to single seaters, lets not forget that we have had women competing in the WRC in the past, Le Mans, Indycar, NASCAR, the BTCC oh and yes F1 as well.
Over on social media, racing drivers made their cases against the proposition.

Is she right? I think so, and so do most other people I have spoken to on the subject. I'll leave you however with some footage of a racing driver, who happens to be female showing us what she is capable of. Take it away Sabine.

Sive posting this originally it has been announced that Sabine Schmitz - she of the above video will indeed contest the Nurburgring round of the FIA WTCC later this season. No single category required in tin top racing it would seem.
